As, The Savage proved, the combination of David Almond’s profound writing and Dave McKean’s wonderful artwork, can be an absolutely perfect match.

I’m pleased to say with Slog’s Dad, they’ve collaborated once again, with this short moving tale of a young boy grieving for dead father,  and yearning to see him, just one more time.

It is short, very short in fact, but Almond has always been the kind of writer that can pack an emotional punch with few words. And McKean really manages to add so much extra to that with his artwork. I just wish it was all a little longer, a chance to know a little more about the characters, feel for Slog personally, rather than a little-boy-lost.

The brevity, just, (and only just) stops this one from being a really great little book.
